ScaleChem: Studio or Standard?
OLI Studio: ScaleChem is software developed in conjunction with OLI's Produced Water Group consortium, and released in December 2012. OLI Studio: ScaleChem is a new product and it is the planned, eventual replacement for ScaleChem Standard, part of OLI's Original Software products. ScaleChem Standard is still 100% supported by OLI Technical Support, but this software has been moved to the category "maintenance mode only" with the 9.2 release.
Development of OLI Studio:ScaleChem was needed because MEG and MeOH applications required OLI's MSE (Mixed Solvent Electrolyte) framework, which was not present in ScaleChem Standard. If you are using ScaleChem Standard with either MEG or MeOH as a key component, OLI urges an immediate switch to Studio ScaleChem.
Reasons to migrate to OLI Studio: ScaleChem
- REQUIREMENTS WERE SET BY INDUSTRY
OLI Studio: ScaleChem was steered by input from 3 oil and gas majors (Produced Water Group) and requirements for the new code were set by a steering committee from these companies.
- PROGRAM FEATURES
As OLI Studio: ScaleChem was being designed, new features such as contour plots and saturation with a brine (rather than water) were added to the product. Also, many features in the UI were optimized for ease of use.
- DATABANK IMPROVEMENTS
Improvements to oilfield chemistry for updates and improvements to OLI parameters will be done in the OLI MSE model only, and therefore in Studio ScaleChem only.
- TRAINING
Beginning in 2014, AQSim is using only OLI Studio: ScaleChem in both the Chemistry in Brine Production class and the ScaleChem Basics class. This decision is consistent with OLI's decision to phase out ScaleChem Standard, which is in maintenance only mode

Conversion to Studio: ScaleChem
OLI recommends the migration of ScaleChem Standard to Studio ScaleChem.
- UTILITY AVAILABLE TO READ SCALECHEM STANDARD
Within the Studio ScaleChem program, there is an option to read ScaleChem Standard cases. The ScaleChem Standard conversion facility available within Studio ScaleChem which allows the import of a ScaleChem Standard case into the Studio.
- ONE-HOUR WEB ORIENTATION AVAILABLE
Clients of ScaleChem Standard may receive a complimentary 1-hour orientation to Studio ScaleChem at their convenience. This will be a 1-on-1, interactive meeting where we show the Studio ScaleChem software and point out the differences in case formulation and interpretation.
- SCALECHEM STANDARD IS STILL AVAILABLE
For an indefinite period of time, OLI will provide a copy of ScaleChem Standard as well as Studio ScaleChem to clients who are switching.
- PRIORITY TECHNICAL SUPPORT
OLI's sales partner AQSim offers priority Technical Support via phone and email for any questions or help needed on migrating to Studio ScaleChem.
