Why the special Instructions?

History

In approximately 2005 Honeywell purchased the 'Hysys' code from Aspen Technologies and created Unisim Design. Hysys, at the time, supported the OLI Engine. The OLI Engine was a separate install for Hysys. Unisim Design R350 was the first version of Unisim Design and used the OLI installation package "As is."

With Unisim Design R360 Honeywell requested the the OLI Engine installation be bundled as part of the overall installation package for Unisim Design. OLI complied and provided the files necessary to complete this work. The advantage is that the user did not have to be bothered with two installation packages. The OLI engine installation appeared to be a silent install.

A reoccurring problem began to appear with this arrangement. The Unisim Design program was only being released approximately every 12 months. The OLI Engine program was being released approximately every quarter. This meant that after only a short time, the two programs would not be in sync. Users complained that answers in the OLI stand-alone code (such as the OLI Studio program) did not agree with the current version of the OLI engine in Unisim Design. Because of the single installation package, it was not possible to update the OLI Engine for Unisim Design.

Another problem that occurred is that OLI's customers would contract for new data to be added to the databases. OLI would then complete the addition and then not be able to update the OLI Engine for Unisim Design until the next release of Unisim Design. This was proving to be extremely inconvenient for several of OLI's largest customers.

With the release of UniSim Design R430 the situation has changed. The OLI Engine for Unisim Design is once again a separate installation package controlled by OLI Systems. Although it is still a silent installation a customer purchases UniSim Design from Honeywell with the OLI Engine, OLI can now update the engine when new data is released. If a new database is created then an end user can download the OLI Engine for UniSim Design from the OLI Downloads Website

Security Model Update

Since OLI Systems now controls the updates of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design we needed to update the security model. When you install the OLI Engine for Unisim Design you will also need a serial number obtained from OLI Systems. Depending on your licensing options you may also need a physical hardware device known as a dongle

PH type USB key

or a softkey. You may also need to download and install the OLI Network License manager (which requires either a dongle or a softkey).

We will now review the various installation options you may encounter when installing or upgrading the OLI Engine for UniSim Design.

Users who have the OLI Engine for Unisim Design but have no other OLI products.

This is the simplest of the installation paths you will encounter. We will discuss several topics here

  • First Time Installation of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design
    • Stand-alone Installations
    • Network Installations
  • Upgrade Installations of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design
    • Stand-alone Installations
    • Network Installations

First Time Installation of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design

We will assume that UniSim Design R430 or later has already been installed on your computer.

Stand-Alone Installations

You will need a serial number from OLI Systems, Inc. A serial number has the general format of V2-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXX-XXXX-XXXX

You can then download the OLI Engine for Unisim Design from OLI Downloads Website. You can find detailed instructions for the download here: Downloading OLI software

Installing the software is then quite easy. In general you will follow one of the two procedures below:

You will now need to configure the OLI Engine with Unisim Design. Here is a link on how to do that:

Network Installations

For the Network Installations you will need two serial numbers and a license file from OLI Systems. The two serial numbers are of the format:

Server Serial Number = V2-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

Client Serial Number = V2-YYYY-YYYY-YYYY-YYYY-YYYY-YYYY

The license file name will be of the type:

LS5400002 OLI internal license [Exp 12-31-2014].OLILic

If you have a software based security system (softkey) then the file name will begin with 'LS'. If you have a dongle (USB) based security system the file name will be either 'LH' or 'LA'.

You will then download two programs from the OLI Downloads Website. Here are detailed instructions for Downloading OLI software

These programs are:

  • OLI Network License Server
  • OLI Engine for Unisim Design

Once downloaded, please place the two installation packages and the OLI license file in the same folder.

You must install the OLI Network License Server program first. This is very important!

There are two versions of the OLI Network License Server program, a USB (dongle) based version and a softkey based version. Please install the version that you have:

Once the server is installed and running you may now install the OLI Engine for Unisim Design.

You will now need to configure the OLI Engine with Unisim Design. Here is a link on how to do that:

Upgrade Installations of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design

The upgrade of the OLI Engine for Unisim Design falls into two categories

  • Reset of the serial number when the program is expired
  • Upgrade to a new version of the OLI Engine

Resetting the Serial Number

Client copies of the OLI Engine do not normally require a reset of the serial number at the end of the lease period. The OLI License Server will be updated with a new license file. Instructions for resetting the OLI License Server can be found here: Resetting the OLI License File

Resetting the serial number for stand-alone copies will occur at the end of the current license period. This is frequently in December but this date will depend on your contract with OLI System, Inc.

The resetting of the serial number is covered in a separate web link: Resetting the Serial Numbers for the OLI Engine in Unisim Design

Upgrade to a new version of the OLI Engine

When a new version of the OLI Engine for Unisim Design is available you can download it from the OLI Downloads Website. Detailed download instructions can be found here: Downloading OLI software

You can install this version as though it was a new installation (see above). The current stand-alone serial number or the current client serial number (for network versions) can be used to install the updated software. In many instances the previous serial number will be recovered from the registry and will be displayed in the installation dialogs. Overwrite this value as required.

Once you have upgraded the software you will now need to configure the OLI Engine with Unisim Design. Here is a link on how to do that:

Users who have both the OLI Engine for UniSim Design and other OLI Products (such as OLI Studio)

This section pertains primarily to users who have a network version of the OLI Software. There are some instances where a stand-alone version will be used.

Prior to the release of Unisim Design R430, the security for the OLI Engine in Unisim Design was part of the Honeywell security program. With R430, OLI now controls the security for the OLI Engine. We will discuss several topics here

  • First Time Installation of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design
    • Stand-alone Installations
    • Network Installations
  • Upgrade Installations of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design
    • Stand-alone Installations
    • Network Installations

First Time Installation of the OLI Engine for UniSim Design

In this scenario, you already have OLI Software (such as the OLI Studio) installed and you are now adding the OLI Engine for Unisim Design to your computer. This is rather straight-forward and all you need to do is a simple installation.

Network Installations

For a network installation, we are assuming that you already have the OLI License Server running on your network. To add the OLI security module for the OLI Engine in Unisim Design you will need an updated license file from OLI Systems.

The license file name will be of the type:

LS5400002 OLI internal license [Exp 12-31-2014].OLILic

If you have a software based security system (softkey) then the file name will begin with 'LS'. If you have a dongle (USB) based security system the file name will be either 'LH' or 'LA'.

You will now need to update the license file on the server. Here is a link on how to do that: Updating the OLI License Server with a New License File

Once you have upgraded the software you will now need to configure the OLI Engine with Unisim Design. Here is a link on how to do that:

Using a command line configuration tool (a/k/a silent install)

The configuration tool will need to be run as part of the installation script for end-users to install their software. It supports command line options to enable the configuration without and input from a user. For Example:

                      Ex: OLIEngineConfigTool.exe /App:Unisim /Link:"OLI Engine 9.2" /AppVer:"UniSim R440" /ALL

In this example we are linking the current version of the OLI Engine for Unisim Design which is 9.2.3 or later (earlier versions do not support the link for Unisim Design - AppVer). We are then linking to R440 of Unisim Design.
