Frequently Asked Questions for Installation and Security

1. What is the difference between Network License vs Individual License?
For both Network and Individual the software is installed locally on the user’s computer.
For Individual licenses the security is also installed locally. These could be:
a. USB Keys
b. Software Based Keys (Softkey)
c. Trials
For network licenses when the software is started it will go to the license server to check for a valid license. Up to the limit of the license, typically 1-20 can connect to the network license at a time.

2. How many network licenses can be installed per machine or host/server computer?
A server can only host 1 license. This means only 1 network license can be installed per machine/server/host.

3. What if there are two licenses for a University? One for research and one for education?
Each license must be hosted on a separate server. We can provide 2 separate licenses, one for EDR and one for EDU.
The other option is to combine the 2 licenses onto a single license file – we will just add the concurrencies together. The disadvantage of this, is that the academic users could simultaneously use all the research copies locking out the researchers.

4. USB Dongle usage (non-network)
The USB is more flexible in that it can be shared with others by simply inserting the dongle in another PC.

5. Software Based Keys (softkey) usage
The softkey can be more convenient if you are the only user (no dongle to keep track of) but it is tied to the MAC address, CPU serial number, hard drive serial number, among others of a single PC and cannot be moved.

6. Concurrencies (seats) and their usage
The concurrent users (any number can have the software installed) and the concurrent users can connect to the license server to get access up to the limit in the license.

7. How many users can use the software when?
The number of concurrent users is limited by the license. For example, a 20-concurrency license allows 20 users to use the software simultaneously.

8. Do I need a server computer for the license server?
YES, you need a computer to host the license server (either a physical box or a virtual machine). The license manager software will sit on this server machine.
The only requirement is that this server needs to be on and running when the software is expected to be used, typically 24 hour a day.

9. Do I need 1 server or 2 and why?
If you have more than 1 network license, then each license should be hosted on a separate server.
The other option is to combine the 2 licenses onto a single license file – we will just add the concurrencies together. The disadvantage of this, is that one set of users could simultaneously use all the copies for the other set of users locking them out.

10. Can I install the Server and OLI Software in the same machine?
Yes, but it is not recommended. Other users may need to use the software via the network server which would require the local computer to be available, e.g., turned on and connected to the network.

11. I have two different license servers with different serial numbers, do I use 1 client serial number for both license servers?
No, you need to use the client serial number that is paired for each server. They are not interchangeable.

12. What is the OLI Network License Manager/provider?
OLI frequently uses the names interchangeably. The OLI Network License Manager is also known as the OLI Network Security Provider.

13. What is the OLI Network License Admin Program vs. OLI Network License Admin Tool?
These are the same program.

14. What do I do to upgrade from a Trial of the OLI Software?
Uninstall the trial software and then installed the Licensed Software. This will force the installation of the hardware and software drivers.

15. Will methods of encryption be deployed to protect the data at rest. Encryption at rest means the data is stored in an encrypted format so that it is not easily readable
Documents for desktop applications are stored in Binary format that is compressed no data encryption is utilized in data storage for user data. For a user created databank the data is encrypted.

16. Will methods of encryption be deployed to protect the data in motion? Encryption in motion means the data is transmitted using secure protocols such as HTTPS/ SSL /TLS 1.2 from source to destination
Our license server information is encrypted prior to transmission and uses Microsoft RPC communication over TCP/IP. Support requests from the software are currently sent over http

17. Does the software store data collected? Will the software, if installed on a third party server, store any company related data?
The only data that would be installed would be server name for a network license server and potentially users name/company if provided during the install.

18. Does the software require transmission of data? Does the software send data to any 3rd party system?
Version 10 of the OLI Software does not send any data to a 3rd party. For version 9.6 data there is an option to send data to a 3rd party in an encrypted form. Users can opt in or out for this feature. For version 9.6 usage data is sent to Revulytics with user approval (opt in/out on initial startup). Version 9.6 is the only version where data is sent to a 3rd party. For versions 10 and later, and 9.5 and earlier, no data is sent.

19. Does the software utilize custom code? Does the installed software, if vendor supplied, contained customer related/specified source code changes other than standard configuration?
OLI Desktop software is a single release for all users

20. Does the software require elevated rights to install or use?
Install – Yes
Use – No
Exception: License manager configuration and start/stop requires admin rights

21. Why do you have to update the client serial number?
We describe in detail when you need to update the client serial number
22. If a newer version of an installation package is applied to a user's machine where a previous version existed, does the previous version get replaced?
No, the newer version will not replace the older version. You can have multiple major versions on the computer at the same time such as v10 and v11. What you cannot have is multiple minor versions such as 10.0.1 and 10.0.2, that is not supported.
23. Are files saved in a previous version upwardly compatible with the newer version?
Yes they are upwardly compatible but to a point. Really old files, such as from OLI Analyzer 3.0 probably will not open properly in a later version such as V11. You would need to use the intervening programs first. Ask OLI to send those programs to you.
24. If you are upgrading the software do you also need to upgrade the license file, license server software, or anything else related to the server?
No, Software versions are independent of the license file or server. No upgrade is required. Having said that, V11 may require a server upgrade if you purchased a limited database product. Contact support.
25. How do you remove the OLI Software? Is anything left behind?
The add/remove program function in Windows is the way to remove the OLI Software. This removes all programs but will leave the sentinel drivers behind. Drivers usually require administrative rights to add or remove. We don't normally remove them at the same time as the software. Add/Remove will also remove them but as a separate step
